Ground Fighting Techniques

In addition to teaching interviewing techniques at the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy, I was also the lead defensive tactics instructor at the Academy from 1992 - 1999. In the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993, winner Royce Gracie showed the world that if you don't know how to defend yourself when the fight goes to the ground, you are probably in big trouble. This led me to incorporate some ground fighting techniques into our defensive tactics program. I believe we were the first federal law enforcement agency to teach such techniques. I had the opportunity to go to Torrance, CA and work out with Royce Gracie who helped refine our program. I received further training in ground fighting when I had the opportunity along with Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Arthur to go to the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, CA and train with the Navy Seals. We attended their "Combat Fighting Course" formerly known as SCARS. To my knowledge, we are the only two civilians who have been allowed to take this training.
Since the Marshals Service Training Academy is located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), once I had our ground fighting program fine-tuned, I introduced the techniques to FLETC. I offered after-hour classes that were open to students from other agencies who were training at FLETC.
In 2000, I made the video "Ground Fighting Techniques for Law Enforcement Officers" which shows you how to survive when the fight goes to the ground. Although the video is designed for law enforcement, anyone will benefit from these techniques. The video/DVD was available to purchase through my website for about 10 years. By 2010, there were a plethora of ground fighting videos on the market so I stopped manufacturing my video. In 2021, I decided to post my video online for anyone to watch for free. As you watch this video, remember this saying which I always told my students. It applies to any type of training.
