Statement Analysis Test

The subject returned the money on Monday at 8:00 pm

Throughout her statement the subject mentions several time references.

"Sunday morning I came into work. I don't remember the exact time, but it was probably around 9 or 10 am. I was working on a report that I had to e-mail to Odoms that day. I worked until around 4:30, then went home. I might have stopped at the grocery store, but I don't remember. After I got home, I rested, had dinner, and watched TV until 11 when I went to bed.

She is consistent throughout her story in using a numerical number when describing what time she was doing something. However, there is one time when she deviates from this pattern.

"Since Monday January 19 was Martin Luther King day the bank was closed and the deposit would have to be put in the night deposit. I don't know that I did or did not make the deposit to the bank that day. I don't think I did because there was so much work to do that I would not have had the time. I worked until 7 or so and then went home. I got home around eight, had supper and relaxed until around 10:30 or 11 and went to bed."

There are no synonyms in Statement Analysis. Every word means something different. For example, "car" and "vehicle" do not mean the exact same thing. Likewise, "gun" and "pistol" do not mean the same thing. This rule also applies to numbers. "Eight" and "8" do not mean the exact same thing. A change in language means there is a change in reality. Something happened (reality has changed) which caused her to change her language. The reason she unknowingly wrote the word "eight" instead of using the number 8 is because she knew this was the time she made the deposit. People's words will betray them.

On Tuesday and Wednesday she tells us that she does not remember if she worked on the deposit. However, Monday is the only day in which she states she does not remember if she made a deposit; "I don't know that I did or did not make the deposit to the bank that day." Also the fact that she mentions a positive and a negative "I did or did not" draws attention to Monday. A lot of innocent people would state, "I don't know if I made a deposit that day."

After she confessed that she took the money, she was told that she returned the money on Monday at 8:00 pm. Her response was, "How did you know that?"
